Imphal: The Manipur Police has taken legal action against Meitei Leepun chief Pramot Singh, registering a criminal case against him on charges of promoting inter-group enmity and criminal conspiracy.
According to an official source, the case was registered at the Kangpokpi police station on July 8 following a complaint lodged by Kuki Students Organization (KSO), Sadar Hills, Kangpokpi.
The KSO accused Meitei Leepun chief and another group, Arambai Tenggol, of inciting violence in Manipur.
Ongoing ethnic tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities escalated after the tribal solidarity march on May 3, which resulted in the loss of more than 140 lives and the displacement of more than 54,000 people.
The Kuki Students Organization filed the complaint on June 13, and the FIR was officially registered on July 8. The Manipur Police is now investigating the case, gathering evidence to substantiate the charges against Pramot Singh.
Meanwhile, on July 9, the Association of Meiteis in the Americas (AMA) organized a day of peace protests in San Francisco, California, and on June 25 in Austin, Texas. The purpose of these protests was to raise awareness about the ongoing violent conflict in Manipur, India.
During these peaceful gatherings, Manipuri women dressed in traditional attire chanted slogans such as “End Violence,” “Save Manipur,” “National Security Matters, Protect the Integrity of Manipur,” “Ho Ima Manipur, Nang Gumbi.” They carried placards with powerful messages such as ” leite Ima” (Oh Mother Manipur, we are your children) and “Unarmed for peace.”
Participants called for urgent action to end the violence, address the crisis, and draw attention to the immediate issues hindering recovery and return to normalcy in Manipur.
