Dimapur: A massive fire broke out at the Burma camp in Nagaland’s Dimapur district on Sunday, killing a woman and displacing around 900 people, an official said.
He said that the fire broke out in the East Block of Burma Camp around 12 pm.
He said that around 260 mud houses, which were made of thatch, were gutted in the fire.
A woman, aged in her 70s, was burnt to death in the fire, and several others were injured. Several fire service personnel were also injured in the fire as a large number of gas cylinders exploded, the official said.
Around 900 people, mostly labourers, were displaced by the fire, he said, adding that the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained.
Local people said that some people are also missing.
Fire tenders from Chumukedima, Dimapur and Central fire stations were deployed to control the fire, which was brought under control after three hours, the official said.
Property worth lakhs of rupees was destroyed, said a Gaon Barah of East Block, adding that the exact damage would be known only after a proper assessment.
In 2011, three people were killed in a fire in the same area.
