8 members of Chakma Autonomous District Council found guilty

Aizawl: A special court in Mizoram state capital Aizawl convicted eight former executive members (EMs)of the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) on Tuesday for misappropriation of funds.

A special judge (prevention of corruption act.), DT. HTC Lalrinchhana, convicted eight former members of the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC)  under Section 13 (2) read with 13 (1) (a) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 read with 120 B of IPC and Section 409 read with 120B of IPC.

As per the verdict by the judge, Under Section 13 (2) r/w 13 (1) (a) of PC Act r/w 120 B of IPC, imprisonment for four years and a fine of Rs. one lakh each, another one year if they do not pay the fine. The judge also pronounced under Section 409 r/w 120B of the IPC, imprisonment for four years each and a fine of Rs. one lakh

The judge also said that their imprisonment terms are concurrent, but their fines are not concurrent. They shall be sentenced to four years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs. 2 lakh each. If they fail to pay the fine, they will be sentenced to another two years of imprisonment.

The eight convicted persons are Shanti Jiban Chakma, Hiranand Tongchangya, Sanjeev Chakma, Kusum Lota Chakma, Onish Moy Chakma, Buban Kumar Chakma, Mohan Chakma and Anil Kanti Chakma.

However, the main accused in the case, former CEM of CADC, Buddha Lila Chakma, had passed sway on October 10 this year.
