Guwahati: 7 out of 19 Assamese construction workers missing in Arunachal were rescued from forests. Seven of the 19 construction workers missing in Assam have been rescued from the deep forests of Arunachal Pradesh, officials said on Saturday.
Construction workers from Lower Assam, who were engaged in road construction work by the Border Roads Organization (BRO), went missing from Kurung Kumey district of Arunachal Pradesh along the China border last week.
Kurung Kumey Deputy Commissioner Nighee Bengia said the search for the rest of the workers is ongoing.
7 laborers were rescued till 12.30 am. They were found to be very weak,” Bengia told The New Indian Express.
He said that these people are being given food and medicine. They are believed to have been kept in a BRO camp.
“His statements will be recorded after his health improves,” Bengia added.
According to reports, they were found on Friday by villagers inside a dense forest about 20-25 km from Hori in Kurong Kome district.
Workers from Bongaigaon, Kokrajhar and Dhubri districts of lower Assam were engaged in construction of a road from Damin Circle in Kurung Kumey district to the China border through BRO.
They escaped from their camp at Howri in the district on the night of July 5, apparently after not being allowed to go home to celebrate Eid.
The workers had taken a shortcut through the forest to return to their homes in Assam.
The villagers reportedly informed the police that the workers left the construction site after the contractor refused to grant them a few days leave.
SDRF personnel are continuing their search operation while NDRF will soon join the search operation to trace the missing workers.
Indian Air Force (IIAF) helicopters will also be used to search for the remaining missing construction workers.
