2 VDF personnel alongwith 3 from Assam arrested with drugs

Imphal: Police in Manipur have arrested three persons from Assam and two Village Defense Force (VDF) personnel in connection with drug seizure.

They were arrested with 3.69 kg of brown sugar, which is worth around Rs 4 crore in the international market, from various places in Manipur.
The nexus between Assam’s errant VDF personnel and drug smugglers came to light when three Assamese smugglers were arrested on NH02 Imphal – Dimapur at Maram on their way from Imphal in Manipur to Dimapur with contraband.

After questioning, Assam traffickers told the police that they got help from VDF officials in drug smuggling after paying Rs 1 lakh.
Manipur Police said that on their information, two VDFs involved in the crime have been arrested, and Rs 1 lakh has also been recovered from them.

Sinapati district police seized 3.69 kg of brown sugar packed in 79 soap cases during an operation near Maram center under Maram police station of the district.
The VDF personnel were later identified as Mohan Kumar (23) and H Solomon (32).

The other three arrested from Assam were Lalpu Singsit, Haogin Lhangum and Robert Lenthan.
They are reportedly hails from Karbi Anglong district of Assam.

They were taken into custody after the banned drugs were found in the Tata Safari car they were traveling in, Manipur Police said.

Manipur Police added that all the arrested persons and the seized drugs, recovered Rs 1 lakh and the seized vehicles have been handed over to the respective police stations for further legal action.
