KHONSA: In a joint operation by the Khonsa Battalion of the Assam Rifles and the Arunachal Pradesh Police, two active freedom fighters of the United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA -I) were arrested in Tirap district on Friday morning.
Joint security forces, acting on confirmed intelligence, launched an operation in the early hours of the day in the border village of Noglo, officials said.
Its objective was to intercept the hardline insurgents who had crossed the Indo-Myanmar border with the intention of carrying out subversive activities in Assam.
The arrested freedom fighters have been identified as self-styled Private Rituraj Gohain, also known as Pullin Asom, and self-styled Private Montu Neog, alias Maina Asom. Both the men are residents of Assam and were recruited into the ULFA (I) group last year.
This successful operation is of significant importance as the country prepares to celebrate its 76th Independence Day next month.
Authorities have witnessed a series of apprehensions and surrenders of ULFA (I) militants in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tirap, Changlong, and Longding (TCL) areas this year. Officials added that these developments have dealt a major blow to the activities and organizational structure of the banned outfit, giving a major boost to the efforts of the security forces in maintaining peace and stability in the region.
