13th Foundation Day honored by Coordination Committee Manipur

Imphal: On July 8, 2024, the Coordination Committee (CorCom) will commemorate its 13th Foundation Day. In a statement release on the occasion, CorCom has paid respect to the revolutionary organizations and people of Manipur (Kangleipak) and the broader WESEA region. This event will be marked with events aimed at honoring the sacrifices of those who have fought for Manipur’s freedom and sovereignty.
In a statement, CorCom emphasized the historical and political significance of Manipur. “Manipur, recognized as a distinct nation-state with a defined territory, population, government, and sovereignty, has a long and storied history that has faced numerous challenges from British colonization to Indian assimilation efforts,” said CorCom.

The organization highlighted the pivotal transformations in Manipur’s socio-political landscape following British colonization in 1947 and Indian integration in 1949.
Addressing contemporary struggles, CorCom’s statement mentions that “there is an ongoing proxy wars and intensive conflicts instigated by the Indian state.”

The narrative of forced assimilation, resource extraction, and the imposition of a captive economy are central themes in their statement. CorCom, further, states that “these strategies have undermined Manipur’s autonomy and subjected its people to prolonged hardship and deprivation.”
The organization praised the resilience and steadfastness of Manipur’s population in facing these adversities. CorCom called for unity and continued efforts in the decolonization process to reclaim sovereignty and self-determination.

“This struggle is not merely against India but also against internal collaborators who have betrayed the cause for personal gains,” the statement read.
Coordination Committee (CorCom) also condemned the use of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), 1958, which grants extensive powers to Indian security forces in Manipur. “The Act is seen as a tool of oppression designed to suppress the voices of the people and maintain control over the region,” CorCom asserted.
Geopolitical dynamics were also a focal point in CorCom’s narrative. The organization expressed suspicion towards India’s strategic ambitions in the WESEA region, underpinned by policies such as Look East and Act East.

“These policies, aimed at strengthening ties with ASEAN countries, are perceived as part of a broader strategy to counter China’s influence and secure India’s economic and military interests,” said CorCom. T

he Kaladan project and other infrastructural initiatives were highlighted as serving India’s strategic goals while marginalizing local populations.
CorCom also pointed to the involvement of international actors like the United States, whose strategic interests in the region further complicate the situation. “US’s geopolitical rivalry, particularly with China, has exacerbated local conflicts and instability,” stated CorCom.
Looking ahead, CorCom articulated a clear vision for Manipur’s future. The organization called for a united front to resist external domination and internal betrayal. “The path forward involves a collective effort to uphold the idea of Manipur—a vision of self-sustaining, sovereign, and peaceful coexistence,” CorCom said.
“Our message is one of resilience and hope, urging the people to stay united and steadfast in their struggle for justice and sovereignty,” said CorCom.
