Shillong: The Department of Telecom (DoT) has identified around 1.52 lakh mobile connections in six northeastern states that were issued on the basis of forged or forged documents.
These SIM cards are found in the six northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura.
Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) in these six northeastern states disconnected more than 1.47 lakh mobile connections that failed the re-verification process.
For further investigation and appropriate action against the culprits, TSPs have so far banned 493 Point of Sale (PoS) and lodged 71 police complaints against suspected PoS.
Most cyber crimes, financial fraud, and anti-social activities are carried out using SIMs subscribed to fake documents.
To detect and eliminate such suspicious SIMs, DoT has taken the initiative to conceptualize and implement an innovative and indigenous artificial intelligence and facial recognition powered solution for Telecom SIM Subscriber Authentication (ASTR). A next-gen platform aimed at preventing cybercrimes.
To identify phone subscriptions, the system analyzes subscriber images and consults the database of Telecom Subscriber Providers (TSPs).
