The protest followed a 12-hour bandh called by an unidentified organization opposing the renaming move. By evening, the situation spiraled after demonstrators allegedly hurled stones at police, prompting a baton charge. At least one protester was injured in the confrontation, while journalists covering the incident were also reportedly targeted.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Partha Pratim Das confirmed that 110 individuals, mostly N.C. College students, were detained for violating restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which had been imposed the previous evening. A college professor was also taken into custody for obstructing senior officials from performing their duties.
Shops, businesses, and malls across the district remained shuttered as security personnel continued to maintain a heavy presence in the area. Authorities later confirmed that the situation was under control but reiterated that violations of prohibitory orders would not be tolerated.
Officials urged citizens to exercise restraint, stressing that while peaceful demonstrations are permitted, any breach of BNSS restrictions would invite strict legal action.
