The demonstration at Chachal Public Dharna Place in Guwahati drew students who carried banners declaring “We condemn the brutal murder of Pu Nehkam Jomhao, Thadou Martyr”, following the 59-year-old peace advocate’s killing in Karbi Anglong district on August 30.

The memorandum presented to the Chief Minister’s office outlined six specific demands addressing both immediate justice and long-term security concerns. Students called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those involved in Jomhao’s murder, describing the killing as not merely a personal attack but an assault on peace and communal harmony.

Central to their demands was the abrogation of the Suspension of Operations agreement with Kuki militant groups, whom they blame for the killing. The memorandum specifically requested that the Kuki Revolutionary Army, Kuki Liberation Army, and United Kuki Defence Army be declared terrorist organisations in Assam.

The students also demanded the dismantling of militant camps operating in Assam and neighbouring states, along with enhanced security assurances for Thadou leaders and activists. Their petition included requests for rehabilitation and compensation for Jomhao’s family and stronger government measures to protect the cultural identity of the Thadou people.

Jomhao, who served as chairman of the Thadou Literature Society, had been actively involved in peace-building efforts, including the recent “Road to Peace – Covenant of Community Understanding” signed between Manipur civil society organisations and the Thadou Indigenous Movement on August 6. His mutilated body was recovered five days after the attack, intensifying community outrage.

Students emphasised that the killing threatens broader peace initiatives in the ethnically diverse region and demands swift government intervention to prevent further violence against minority community leaders.
