Students protested at Tezpur University on November 9, voicing strong opposition to ‘discriminatory hostel timings’ enforced within the closed campus.
The demonstration, primarily led by female students, saw participants rallying across the university premises, demanding equal rights and dignity for all genders. Students questioned the rationale behind restrictive hostel entry rules, terming them outdated and patriarchal.
Protesters deliberately stayed out of their hostels beyond the prescribed in-time as a symbolic act of resistance, urging the university administration to revoke what they viewed as regressive and gender-biased curfews.
โThe motive is to break the shackles,โ said one of the student representatives. โWe stand for our unanimous right to equal respect, equal dignity, and equal opportunity irrespective of gender identity.โ
The students have also sought an immediate dialogue with the university authorities to ensure that policies governing hostel timings align with principles of equality and individual freedom. As of now, the administration has yet to release an official statement regarding the studentsโ demands.
