A large-scale human chain protest swept across the streets of Imphal on Saturday, May 24 as several major civil society organizations united to voice their discontent against what they termed as Centreโs โpolicies of eroding Manipurโs identity.โ
The demonstration was led by key organizations including the All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO), Poirei Leimarol Meira Paibi Apunba Manipur (PLMPAM), All Manipur Women Voluntary Association (AMAWOVA), and the Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF). The protest spanned nearly 7 to 8 kilometers, stretching from Changangei Uchekon to Kwakeithel along the Imphal West Tiddim Road.
Thousands of students, Meira Paibis (women torchbearers), youth activists, local club members, and volunteers from student unions joined hands in a show of unity. Protesters held placards and raised slogans denouncing alleged attempts by the central government to dilute the cultural and political identity of Manipur.

“Manipur Muthatnaba India Leingkki Thouwong โ Yaningde” (Condemn Indiaโs Policy to Obliterate Manipur)
“Protect Manipur’s Identity”
“Stop Divide & Rule Policy”
“Self-Determination is Our Birthright”
“Oust Colonial Law โ AFSPA”
The spark behind the protest was an incident on May 20, when a group of journalists traveling to cover the Shirui Lily Festival in Ukhrul district was reportedly asked by personnel from the Mahar Regiment to conceal the ‘Manipur State Transport’ signage on their official vehicle. The incident occurred at Gwaltabi checkpoint, about 25 km from Imphal. The media team refused to comply and returned to Imphal, leading to widespread outrage in the valley districts and the call for mass protest.
The organizers criticized what they described as systematic efforts to belittle the autonomy and identity of Manipur and called for immediate withdrawal of repressive laws like the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA).
