The people of Sadar Hills, Kangpokpi District, gathered Sunday evening for a candlelight vigil at the district headquarters under the theme “The People of Sadar Hills, Kangpokpi District Stand United with Our Indian Soldiers โ Proud to Be Indian” to honour the fallen jawans and show solidarity with five grievously injured soldiers.
The attack, allegedly carried out by valley-based insurgent groups, occurred just days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Manipur and ahead of the Manipur Merger Agreement anniversary. The National Revolutionary Front of Manipur had announced a shutdown on September 21, opposing the merger.
CoTU spokesperson Ng. Lun Kipgen criticised the failure of the state and central governments to apprehend the perpetrators two days after the ambush.
“This is a matter of grave national security concern. The inaction of the authorities not only undermines constitutional validity under President’s Rule but also poses a direct threat to the Indian Union itself,” Kipgen said.
He argued the incident highlights dangers posed by the contested Free Movement policy, which the Kuki-Zo community has rejected. “When even the Centre’s own forces are not spared by secessionist groups, what guarantee do the Kuki-Zo have for their safety?” he questioned.
Kipgen emphasised the Kuki-Zo community’s peaceful stance, noting their adherence to the Suspension of Operations Agreement despite provocations. He reiterated CoTU’s demand for separate administration under Article 239A as the only path to lasting peace and stability.
CoTU stated the economic blockade serves as a compelled measure to register displeasure over the brutal ambush, delayed justice, and the governor’s failure to exercise constitutional authority under President’s Rule.
