Margherita witnessed a black flag protest on August 29 as members of the Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad, Assam (TAYPA) raised their voices against Union Home Minister Amit Shahโ€™s visit to the state.

The demonstration, organised by TAIPAโ€™s Margherita Co-District Committee at North Margherita Rangmanch, highlighted the long-standing demand for granting Scheduled Tribe status to six ethnic communities, including the Tai Ahoms.

Protesters carried black flags to register their opposition, drawing a heavy presence of police and district administration officials who attempted to prevent the gathering.

TAIPA leaders declared that the agitation would continue until their demand is met. They also issued a warning that the organisation could consider boycotting the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections if the government fails to recognise the six communities as Scheduled Tribes.
