The protestors set ablaze an effigy of Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, while shouting slogans such as โ€œHimanta Biswa Sarma Murdabaad,โ€ โ€œAmit Shah Murdabaad,โ€ โ€œNarendra Modi Murdabaad,โ€ and โ€œNo to CAA.โ€ The demonstration reverberated with sharp criticism of the BJP-led government both at the Centre and in the state.

Speakers at the protest alleged that the Assam government was making attempts to reintroduce CAA, which, they claimed, would jeopardize the future of indigenous communities by granting citizenship to foreigners. They expressed fears that the law would endanger the cultural identity and demographic balance of the Assamese people.

The effigy burning, according to the student leaders, was a symbolic act of resistance and anger. They further warned that CAA will never be accepted in Assam under any circumstances and demanded the lawโ€™s complete withdrawal.
