The ASU, accusing the committee of evading dialogue over a recent dispute, launched the demonstration just days ahead of its scheduled conference and leadership elections.
While the ASU maintains that the protest aimed to initiate discussion on unresolved issues, the Bazar Committee has alleged that the union had been collecting “forceful donations” from shopkeepers in the name of fundraising, fueling public unease and sparking backlash.
The protest witnessed slogans not only targeting the Bazar Committee but also sharply criticising ASU’s leadership, further intensifying the discord. With both sides holding their ground and refusing to engage in open talks, the situation has led to confusion among residents and business owners, casting a shadow over the upcoming student body elections.
Despite the rising tensions, district authorities have yet to issue an official statement. Locals are now calling for immediate intervention and mediation to prevent further disruption in the usually peaceful town of Ziro.
