A mob attack killed an NGO member in Meghalayaโ€™s West Garo Hills district on Friday evening. Police arrested three people and tightened security in Goalgaon village under the Rajabala constituency.

The district administration imposed a night curfew to prevent further violence and maintain law and order.

Dilseng M Sangma, the victim was a member of the Aยทchik Conscious Holistically Integrated Krima (ACHIK), a Garo civil society organisation.

Officials said Sangma was part of a group of 10โ€“12 ACHIK members present in Goalgaon when a mob allegedly attacked them. The assault also left another NGO member seriously injured. Doctors are treating the injured person at a hospital.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma termed the incident โ€œtragicโ€ and strongly condemned the violence. He appealed for peace and brotherhood among communities.

โ€œPolice have conducted multiple raids and arrested three accused so far. Teams are searching for others involved,โ€ the chief minister said. He urged people to maintain communal harmony and cooperate with authorities.

Rajabala MLA Mizanur Kazi said police are investigating the case thoroughly and will take strict action against those responsible.

โ€œWe are still verifying how the incident unfolded. We condemn the violence and demand the harshest punishment for the culprits,โ€ Kazi said.

He appealed for calm and said preliminary inputs suggest the ACHIK members arrived in the village in two vehicles. A confrontation then broke out with local residents and workers in the area.

โ€œThis does not appear to be premeditated. It seems to have happened suddenly. Even so, it is deeply condemnable,โ€ the MLA said, while expressing condolences to the victimโ€™s family.

As a mark of respect, traders shut the entire market stretch from Haldiganj to Gumaijhora on Saturday. The market area falls under the Rajabala and Selsella constituencies.

Meanwhile, the district administration stepped up peace-building efforts. The Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police held a peace meeting with village elders, church leaders and community representatives at Rajabala on Saturday afternoon.

Authorities also held a similar meeting earlier in the day at Tura, the district headquarters, to prevent any retaliatory violence.

Officials said the situation remains tense but under control. Police have deployed additional forces in sensitive areas.
