Violence flared up again in Assamโ€™s West Karbi Anglong district on December 23 evening as protesters set fire to the Kheroni weekly market, escalating tensions in the area days after a spate of arson left around 15 shops gutted.

Officials said the latest incident occurred amid continuing unrest in Kheroni, raising concerns over the fragile law and order situation. The market, a key commercial hub for local residents, was reportedly targeted during protests, further disrupting normal life in the region.

Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Suraksha Sanhita continue to remain in force, with a heavy deployment of security forces to prevent further violence. Authorities said strict restrictions are being enforced to curb movement and prevent the gathering of crowds.

Assam Director General of Police Harmeet Singh is currently present in Kheroni along with other senior police and civil administration officials to closely monitor the situation. The senior officers are also engaged in dialogue with protestors and community representatives in an effort to defuse tensions and restore peace.

The district administration said it is keeping a close watch on developments and has warned that stringent action will be taken against those involved in acts of violence and arson.
