Kukis attacked a team of Government officials led by SDC Sekmai and security forces who went to Kanto Premnagar to assess IDP resettlement measures by pelting stones.

One staff of SDC Sekmai and one IDP sustained injuries in the attack which took place at around 11 am today at Kanto Premnagar, under Sekmai police station.

As a part of the Government’s resettlement measures, a team of Government officials led by SDC Sekmai and security forces went to Keingam Ching-mang and Kanto Premnagar to make an assessment of the prevailing situation.

The security team included police personnel led by SDPO Lamphel, Sekmai PS Officer-in-Charge and troops of GR stationed in Leimakhong military garrison.

As the team assessed and took photographs of the Meitei houses which were burnt down and vandalised by Kukis at Kanto Premnagar, around 20 Kuki individuals armed with deadly weapons like clubs and machetes came from a nearby area and raised objections to the assessment.

The Kukis then started chasing the team with an intention to attack the officials.

Subsequently the officials and the security forces fled from the spot, sources said.

As the officials and the security forces reached Ex-Servicemen Colony junction, a group of Kukis including both males and females armed with deadly weapons further chased the officials in a Bolero.

In the next moment, they attacked the official team by pelting stones.

One staff of SDC Sekmai and one IDP who went together with the team were injured in the attack.

One IDP said that there is a large army camp at Leimakhong and besides, the assessment team included both Central and State forces.

Instead of facing the Kukis’ attack, the security forces asked the officials as well as the villagers to flee, the IDP decried.

He also questioned how people can put trust in security forces when they act in such a timid and partisan manner.
